History

VadakkeEzhipuram Bhagavathy Temple is famous for its antiquity and its historical importance. It is believed to have been built by the demons. Sree Shankaracharya has sanctified the place with his presence. The temple dedicated to Shanthi Durga is just one kilometre from the Periyar River. It is believed that the valiant King of Kochi, ShakthanThampuran had worshipped in this temple seeking peace of mind. The temple stands 43 feet tall, in three layers.  It is believed to be 2000 years old.  There are writings in the ancient Kannati script on the walls, and many carved figures. The temple faces East. The deity is worshipped as Rajarajeswari also. The more legends say that Parasurama had constructed 108 Durga temples, 108 Siva temples and 18 Shastha temples in Kerala and handed the land over to the Brahmins to avoid the curse resulting from the killing of many Kshathriyas. This temple is the 16th among the Durga temples. In ancient times seven temples used to have the festival celebrated together which led to the area being named Ezhipram. are also consecrated in the temple. Sree Subrahmanya has been consecrated in another temple in the complex. The tantric rights of the temple have been vested with the PuliyanoorMana.
