Komangalam Siva Temple, located at Komangalam in Koottanad, Palakkad district, is an ancient and revered shrine dedicated to Lord Siva. According to local legend, Komangalam, originally known as Homa-Mangalam, was one of the three sacred fire altars (Homa Kundams) established by the renowned Mezhathol Agnihotri during the series of 99 yajnas he is believed to have performed nearly 1,700 years ago. The other two yajna sites were Yajneswaram and Mudavannoor, all situated near Mezhathoor in present-day Palakkad. It is believed that upon the completion of the 99th yajna, Lord Siva manifested on the sacred fire altar (Shyena Chiti) and blessed the yajamana and the assembled devotees. After more His divine disappearance, a Swayambhu Shiva idol emerged at the site, leading Agnihotri and the local villagers to construct a temple in reverence to the deity. The temple was later entrusted to the Kizhuprakat Mana Namboothiri family, who oversaw its administration for generations. The temple also houses several sub-deities, including Maha Vishnu, Bhagavathy, Ayyappan, Ganapathy, Durga, and Dakshinamoorthy. A separate Maha Vishnu temple located outside the main temple complex is believed to have been built by Kudallur Mana. Today, the temple is administered under the Malabar Devaswom Board and managed by a local trustee committee, continuing its rich spiritual and cultural legacy.
