This temple is unique as it is situated in a Kavu with leaves, flowing water and creepers creating a secluded place. The Goddess is worshipped as the Forest Goddess. The Kavu is cleaned, and lamps are lit in the evening every day. Bhajans are offered every Friday and Kalasham on the first of every Malayalam month. The main consecration, the Goddess is believed to be the daughter of Lord Siva. The Kavu has Mukkatiyamma, Chelatt Bhagavathy, Rudhiramala and Karinkali, as well as a Guru consecrated. Gulikan, Muthappan and Shasthappan are the deities who came to visit the Goddess and are consecrated separately. There is also the more Vadakkan Bhagam where fowl are slaughtered, the theyyams get ready, and people pray for the dead ancestors. It is open for worship every Samkramam (first of the Malayalam month) as well as for special days like Kathiru nira, Puthari kalasham and Uthradam Kalasham. When the Kottiyur temple is open, and during the Mandalam period, there will be no slaughter of fowl. The Theyyam is on the 5^th and 6^th of Meenam.  For seven days before that, the whole locality observes austerities and takes only vegetarian food. It is considered the marriage of the Goddess. There are specific times when each of the Theyyams start. Mukkattiyamma will start at 5 in the morning, while Gulikan will emerge at 1 am.  A procession will arrive from the Subrahmanya temple on the other banks of the river before the start of the Theyyam. The Kalasham lamp is lighted by members of the Thiyya community. Unlike in other places, no alcohol is used for the Thira. The Kavu is under the protection of the Forest Department of the State Government, and many very rare plants have been discovered here.
