Rishipuram Siva Temple is an ancient and sacred
temple situated in the serene western valley of Eravathukunnu, Govindapuram,
Kozhikode. The region, known as Rishipuram (Land of Sages), is believed to have
been a spiritual centre where revered sages, including Kanva Maharshi,
performed penance and Vedic rituals. The temple's antiquity is evidenced by
ancient caves, Vattezhuthu inscriptions on the Namaskara Mandapam, an
unopenable Nilavara (cellar), and historical records dating back to 1912.
Tradition holds that Lord Siva manifested here as a Swayambhoo Lingam through
the intense penance of a royal princess who became a disciple of Kanva
Maharshi. The temple enshrines Lord Siva as the principal deity,
more
along with
Goddess Uma Devi, Dharma Sastha, Ganapathy, Bhagavathy, and Nagadevatas. The
temple has deep connections with Kerala’s spiritual heritage and local legends
associated with sages, penance, and divine manifestations. Over time, the
temple experienced periods of decline, but extensive renovation efforts
undertaken since 1998 have restored much of its glory. Today, the temple stands
as an important spiritual and historical landmark. With its ancient caves, sacred
traditions, and rich heritage, Sree Rishipuram Siva Temple is worthy of
preservation as a heritage temple for future generations.
