Kanjoor Sree Durga Devi Temple

History

This temple is at Cheppadu in Alappuzha district. It is dedicated to Goddess Durga Devi. During specific rituals, the Goddess is worshipped as Bhadrakali. The most important ritual is the Kolam Varavu. This is associated with the legend of Goddess Bhadrakali destroying the demon, Darika. She had been created by Lord Siva for this purpose. She killed Darika, who had the boon that one drop of blood that fell from his body would give rise to one thousand Darikas. As the Goddess returned after the killing, it was not possible to calm her down. So, all the Devas wore masks depicting her and came before more the Goddess. This calmed her down. The Kolam is made from the spathe of areca palms, and drawings are made with natural colours. The annual festival is in the month of Dhanu. Navaratri is also celebrated with great fervour. Subordinate deities are Bharakali, Ayyappan, Veerabharan and Yakshi.
