Thrikkakara Vamana Moorthy Temple

History

This is one of the few temples in India where Vamana has been consecrated. This temple is at Thrikkakkara in Ernakulam District. There is a temple dedicated to Lord Siva also here. There are some ancient Palmyra leaves found in this temple which are of historical importance. The temple is one among the 108 divine places described by the Tamil poet-saints Alvars who promoted Vaishnava Bhakti through their songs. The most popular legend about the temple is connected with Mahabali. Mahabali was the grandson of Prahlada. He was a pious and efficient ruler who performed many yajnas and also worked for the welfare of his more people. Proud and sure of his power, he attacked the world of Indra and defeated the Devas. The Devas approached Maha Vishnu to defeat Mahabali. Maha Vishnu took birth as Vamana and reached the sacrificial site of Mahabali. He asked the King for three feet of land. As the King asked him to measure it out, he covered the earth with the first step and the sky with the second. As he was looking for a place to keep his foot for the third step, Mahabali requested him to keep his foot on his head. By doing so Maha Vishnu blessed Mahabali and sent him to Sutala as its ruler. He was allowed to visit the earth on Thiruvonam day in the Malayalam month of Chingam which was the day of the birth of Vamana. Sage Kapila came to hear about this place and came there to do penance. When the Lord appeared, he requested him to remain in that place for the devotees. As it was the place where the Lord’s foot touched the earth, this area came to be known as Thrikkaalkara. (Land of the sacred foot).
