This temple is at Karunagapally, near Alappad
in Kollam district. Before the
construction of the present temple, the consecration was on a red sandstone
platform. There is no idol with a definite figure. It is an eight-sided
Sivalinga type consecration. This is decorated with the image of the Goddess
with sandalwood paste. The temple has
the sea, the river and water bodies around it. Legends say that the Goddess and her retinue were going in a country
boat from Kozhikode when it stopped at this place, and the Goddess sat on the
shore. This later became the temple. As it was the serpents that protected the
goddess in
more
those days, that concept is followed even today. Pujas are offered
for the triumvirate of devis. The present temple is built with Krishna shila,
wood and copper plates. One of the special rituals here is the Pongala offered
every day. Meenoott, feeding the fish, is done on the day of Sree Bhootha Bali
during the annual festival. Sarvakaaryasidhi pooja is performed on all
Tuesdays. People of all castes and
religions come to worship in this temple.
