History

Mambalam Sree Bhagavathy Temple, located at Mambalam, Payyanur, in Kannur District, is a renowned temple deeply rooted in the spiritual and cultural traditions of North Kerala. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathy, revered as a powerful and compassionate divine mother who protects and blesses her devotees. The temple holds a special place in the region for its rich Theyyam traditions, which form an integral part of its religious practices and annual celebrations. One of the most important festivals of the temple is the Kaliyatta Maholsavam, celebrated with great devotion during the Malayalam month of Makaram. Conducted once every two years over a period of four days, more the festival showcases spectacular Theyyam performances, sacred rituals, and vibrant community participation, reflecting the deep spiritual heritage of the region. Another major celebration is the Pooram or Poorakali Festival, observed during the Malayalam month of Meenam, from the Karthika star to the Pooram star, spanning ten days of traditional rituals, cultural performances, and devotional activities. The temple is unique in its worship of several principal deities who are accorded equal importance, including Poomaran Daivam, Kannikuzhimakkan Daivam, Vaadarkulangara Bhagavathy, Puthiya Bhagavathy, Vishnumoorthy, Rekthachamundi, and Madayil Chamundi. The temple also houses Gulikkan as a sub-deity. Serving as a vibrant centre of faith and folklore, Mambalam Sree Bhagavathy Temple preserves the living traditions of Theyyam worship and continues to be a beacon of devotion, culture, and communal harmony.
