Poruvazhi Peruviruthi Malanada Temple is believed to be the only Dhuryodhana Temple in South India. This Temple is decades old and follows very old traditions and customs. While there are many temples dedicated to the Paandavaas, this may be the only temple dedicated to Duryodhana. It is believed that while the Paandavaas were living incognito, Duryodhana, the eldest Kaurava prince made all efforts to find the five brothers and send them back to the forest. Duryodhana travelled far and wide but was not able to find the Paandavaas. While wandering dejectedly, Duryodhana met a sage. The sage came to know that Duryodhana was a great
more devotee of Lord Shiva and directed him to a place nearby where there was a strong presence of the lord. The sage asked him to propitiate Lord Shiva there and find the Paandavaas with his blessings. It was to Malanada that Duryodhana came to pray to Lord Shiva. After severe penance, Lord Shiva appeared before him. The people who lived in that area recognized the presence of Duryodhana there. They built a temple for him at that spot. The temple does not have any shrines or buildings. A basement (Mandapathara) is supposed to be the temple and rituals are done at this spot. The power in this temple is known as Appooppan which is worshipped by lakhs of devotees. The priest of the temple is the elder person of the Kaduthasserry family belonging to the Kurava community. Malakkuda festival is the main celebration which is conducted during the month of Meenam. On the 1st Friday of the month flag is hoisted (Kodiyettam) after the poojas in the Kaduthassery family. The Oorali and the other 4 families with devotees of the temple come with the flag and raise it announcing the start of the festival.
