This ancient temple is at Pottammal, 4 km away
from Kozhikode town. The spacious, two-storeyed sanctum with the
self-originated Sivalinga faces the east. It is believed that many sanyasis
performed penance here to save the world from Kali during Kaliyuga. Lord
Mahadeva appeared as the Sivalinga and blessed them. The huge Balikallu in the
rectangular Balikkalpura is also a unique feature of the temple. Though
Parvathy Devi is not consecrated here, a lamp is lit for her on the other side
of the sanctum. Attached to the sanctum is another smaller sanctum with
Okkathth Ganapathy. Outside Ayyappan, Ganapathy, Vetteykkorumakan, and Serpents
are consecrated. The main festival
more
lasts for three days to end on the day of Maha
Sivarathri. All offerings for Mahadeva, especially Maha Mruthyunjaya Homam and Maha Gnapathy Homam, are performed here.
The Lord is worshipped as Dakshinaamorthy and hence considered special for
those pursuing studies. The temple under the Malabar Devaswam Board is under
renovation.
