This temple is at Arthunkal in Alapuzha
district. It is the followers of the philosopher Prabhakaran, who were famous in
the 10th and 11th centuries after Christ, who established this temple. The followers of those who set up this temple, known as
Gurus, were forced to leave the place when the Portuguese and the Dutch
established their power there in the 15th and 16 th centuries. They left the temple under the care of the Kunnel
Chilambitta Kurup family. There are documents to show that the temple land was
in the name of one of the members of this family. The temple remained dilapidated
for
more
long until in the Malayalam year 1122, the local people formed Aravukadu
Kshethra Yogam and took over the temple.
This Yogam rebuilt the temple. Sree Bhadrakali, becalmed after the
destruction of Darika, is the main deity consecrated here. The annual festival is
on the day of Pooram in the month of Kumbham. During the festival, there is a
special ritual called Arikooth in which the devotees submit their children
before the Goddess to be protected, as Ganesha and Nandikesha were protected on
her return from the killing of Darika. Vela Thullal is also another ritual not
seen in many other temples. Mandalam is observed for 41 days. Aditya puja on
the day of Pathaamudayam in the month of Medam, Vavubali in Karkidakam, Nava
vara Vratham for nine Fridays beginning in the month of Dhanu are also some
special rituals here. Ganapathy,
Brahmarakshass, Paramashiva, Mahavishnu, Subrahmanyan, Shastha, Khandakarnan,
Yakshi and Nagas are consecrated as subordinate deities. The temple is under
the Sivagiri Madam.
