Paloor Sree Subramanya Temple

History

One and a half kilometres from Pulamanthole centre and 12 km from Pattambi of Shorunur-Mangalore Railway line at Paloor is the famous temple of Lord Subramaniyan, renowned as ‘Paloor Kalari’ (Kalari - a training centre for martial arts and family shrine) from ancient period. An old venerable veteran and a unique expert in Kerala’s martial art, Koma Panicker was a very firm believer in ‘Palani Andavan’, (Sree Subramanyan) and visited Palani Hills 101 times. He was an expert in astrology and famous for predicting losses. He could not visit his beloved God due to his old age and meditated Sree Murugan with great dedication. Sree Murugan more felt compassion for Panicker and gave ‘darshanam’(view) to him at Paloor. Panicker constructed a temple at the place where he got the divine sight.  Later a Muslim holy person Veeran Oulia was pleased by the predictions of the twin brothers Narayana Panicker and Unni Panicker and their father Valiya Poosali Krishnankutty Panicker of Paloor Kalari for which he donated a present wrapped in Silk as Barkath (a good fortune). This gift is even now kept as a treasure in the temple and this event lead the temple to a renowned position in religious harmony. The thantri of this temple is Pattambi Andaladi Manackal Vasudevan Namboodirpad. Three Poojas are conducted daily. Respected citizen and expert astrologist Unni Krishna Panicker, the karanevar(head) of the family is the main priest and trustee of the temple. His brothers Gopala Krishna Panicker, and Devadas Panicker and their son Karthikeyan are all famous for their astrological predictions.  Astrological predictions, remedies for problems, computer astrology, horoscope matching, the finding of the auspicious and best time (Mangala Muhoortham) etc. are conducted in this Kalari. People from various places in Kerala and other states come here believing the power of the predictions of these veterans. ‘Vishu of Medam, ‘Vijayadasmi-Vidyarambam’, Navarathri festival, Sree Muruga music festival, Ramayana month observation( Karkidakam), Skanda Shasti Soora Samhara festival in Thulam, Karthika lighting and Laksharchana of Vrichika, Thypooya cart festival in Makaram and Pakuny Uttrum festival are all main festivals of this temple. Ganapathy, Bhuvanswary, Karuppa Swamy, VeeraBhadran, Maruthaveeran, Hanuman Swamy, Navagrahas, Nagakanny and Paradevatha (family deity) of Nalpatheeradi Kalari Devata’s are worshipped in this temple. The Thypooya cart festival of this historically famous Subramaniyam temple extends from Pooyam of the month Dhanu to Thypooyam of the month Makara. This cart festival awakens the memories of history and is today celebrated by the devotees as a grand gala festival of religious harmony. The cultural festival in connection with the cart festival increases the firmness in religious harmony and ultimately Paloor Subramaniya temple is an all-religious pilgrim centre too.
