Puthur Sree Thirpuraikal Bhagavathy Temple, located on Puthur Road in Venkateshapuram Colony, Puthur, Palakkad, is one of the ancient and spiritually powerful temples of Shakthi in the Malabar region. The main deity worshipped here is Goddess Bhadrakali, and the sanctum also enshrines Lord Vishnu, Durga, and Lord Ganesha, adding to its divine significance. Situated about 2 km from Palakkad town, this temple, believed to be over a century old, holds great historical importance. The present structure, built around 75 years ago, stands near an old banyan tree where the Goddess was once believed to reside, reflecting the deep devotion of the local community of Puthur. The temple’s main festival, Puthur Vela, begins in mid-March and concludes in mid-April, spanning nearly a month of vibrant celebrations. One of the most significant rituals during this festival is the traditional ‘Tholpavakoothu,’ a shadow puppet performance depicting stories from the Ramayana, believed to be enjoyed by the Goddess herself each year. This rare art form is preserved in only a few temples in Kerala. Along with this, various traditional temple art forms are showcased, and the festival is further enriched by a prestigious music and dance festival, making it a major cultural and spiritual event in the region.
