Kadakkal Devi Temple Kollam

History

This temple is at Kadaykkal in Kollam district. This temple is unique as all the rituals usually followed in other temples are not practised here. There is no idol consecrated here. Worship is performed by non-Brahmins. According to legends, Anchal Katayatt Unnithan was supervising the work in his field when he saw two beautiful ladies sitting by the field in the hot sun. He broke a branch of the Pala tree (Milkwood Pine) and stuck it on the ground near them to provide some shade. As he was offering them hospitality, they disappeared. At the same time, two ladies appeared at his house, and his mother more made them sit and went in to get some refreshments. But they too disappeared. Then an incorporeal voice announced that one of the ladies was still there while the other had gone to Kataykkal. They were instructed to consecrate the effulgence that remained there slightly to the south of the spot, known as Katayath kalari. The branch of the pala tree stuck there still stands as a huge tree. At Kataykkal, a merchant named Panayappan was returning home in his cart when he noticed a lady with a child walking behind the cart. As they reached home, he offered them a room to stay for the night. The local people believed that it was the merchant's wife and child. When the people came to make enquiries, they heard terrible noises coming from the room. But the room could not be opened. As instructed by Panavoor, Nettoor Panikkar climbed onto the roof and looked through a slit in the thatch. His eye was pierced by a spear, and he was asked not to speak about what he had seen.  Mangalathu Panikkar made astrological consultations and found that the Goddess in the fierce form was present there. No idol or weapon was to be kept there representing the goddess. The door should be opened slightly, and Nettoor Kurup should enter with one eye closed and offer puja. This is followed even today. Goddess Bhadrakali is worshipped at Kataykkal, and her elder sister is worshipped at Kalarikkal. The annual festival is celebrated for ten days to end on the day of the star Thiruvathira in the month of Kumbham. It is celebrated with Kuthiyottam, Kuthirayetuppu and Kalamezhuthum Pattum.
