This temple is at Kodakara, Thrissur district.
The temple has vast fields on three sides. The people believe in the absolute power
of the Goddess to bring blessings and punishment in the form of diseases if
displeased. According to legends, the Goddess of Kodungaloor came with her
ardent devotee Kodassery Kartha to stay at the Melekavu, near the temple. She
had come on his umbrella, which he kept at this place and found it fixed to the
ground on coming back after a bath. This area was protected with a wall at
first, and the Goddess was consecrated in the new temple that was
more
built near it. The
consecration is in the form of Valkannadi instead of an idol. Khandakarnan is
also consecrated at the Melekavu. There is a document to show that the King of
Kochi gave 5 acres and 13 cents of land to the temple, and also to show that the
King directly appointed the oracle for the temple. From 1973 onwards, the
representatives of the different divisions of the Kodakara Panchayath have been managing the temple. The annual festival
is on the 10th of Makaram. The different divisions that constitute
the managing committee take turns in conducting the festival. Thali
Ezhunnallath of the Kudumbi community is the first programme of the
festival. Thali varavu of the Thattan
community, Thalivaravu, Mutiyattam and Kaalakali of the Pulaya community,
Thattinmelkali by the Aasaari community and the Kali Darikan dance and Parayan
thullal by the Sambava community are the highlights of the festival. The temple
also conducts Mahaganapathy homam and Aanayoott on the first Friday of the
month of Karkidakam. There is Bharaniyoott on the day of the star Bharani every
month.
