This temple is in Neendakara, Kollam
district. It is ancient, and the idol is believed to have been consecrated by
Lord Parasurama. Later, when Vilwamangalathu Swamiyar was going to
Thiruvananthapuram to worship Sree Padmanabha Swamy, he got a fragrance coming
from the forest area here. He realised the presence of the power of the goddess
there and offered puja to the effulgence. He offered nivedyam in the Areca leaf
sheath, and this practice is continued to the present. This happened about 758
years ago. He gathered the local people and, with their support, built a temple there.
The Goddess is consecrated facing the sea. Aarattu
more
is performed in the
sea, and most of the local people are fishermen who continue to worship the
Goddess for safety in life. Subordinate deities are Brahmarakshass,
Kotumyakshi, Yakshi, Bhadra and Bhuvaeneswary within the temple and Matan,
Marutha and Kappiri outside the temple. Vilwamangalath Swamiyar saw the Goddess
in the form of a Yakshi, leaning onto a palm with a Valkannadi in hand. So, the
idol of Vanadurga in this form is consecrated at the spot where Swamiyar saw
the Goddess. There is a Kavu with Nagas consecrated. The annual festival is on
the day of the star Karthika in the month of Metam. The main offerings are
Aarupara, Panthirunazhi, and Kathakali.
