This temple is at Arattupuzha, Pattazhy in
Kollam. In ancient times, it was a
Kavu. The elder member of the Idamana
Brahmin family used to offer worship here. Later, the Kavu fell to ruin. The devotees built a temple and consecrated
an idol with four faces and arms that had been lying in the Kavu. Poojas were
offered daily to Nagaraja and Nagayakshi. About 600 years ago, the King of Kottarakkara brought some brahmins from
the north to do the rituals in the temple. Later, this stopped, and the great flood of 1099 destroyed the kavu and
the idols. Later, after astrological
consultations, it was found that Siva
more
and Parvathy were present as
Ardhanareeswara. Muruga and Ganapathy were also consecrated. A small temple was first built, and when that
too fell to ruin, the devotees of the locality came together to renovate and
rebuild the temple. Ardhanareeswara was also consecrated. This idol is almost
as tall as a full-grown man. Siva and Parvathy are on the same pedestal with Pasham, Kapalam, Thrishoolm and Rakthambujam
in the four hands. Hence, devotees come to worship and make offerings to be blessed with a good married
life. Uma Maheswara pooja and Aikamathya pooja are very important here on Mondays, and Dhara and Neeranjanam on Saturdays. Pradosham is also observed with all the
rituals. For the Nagaraja and
Nagayakshi, Noorum Palum is
offered in the month of Kanni. For
Umamaheswara, the annual festival is in the month of Makaram, called Atham
utsavam. Both Siva and the Nagas are consecrated with equal importance.
