Kuzhupillikavu Bhagavathy Temple

History

Kuzhupillikavu Bhagavathy Temple has the unique distinction of having Bhadra Devi and Bhuvaneswari consecrated in the same sanctum sanctorum, facing north.  Legend has it that a Nambothiri residing at Ramamangalam Kottarathil was a great devotee of the Bhagavathy at Kodungaloor. When he was too old to travel to Kodungaloor, he was sad that he would no longer be able to worship her. But the Devi came with him and was consecrated at the illam of the Namboothiri along with Bhuvaneswari. Later the temple was built to the west of Kollikattumala and the two idols consecrated there. Minor deities consecrated there are Khandakarnan, the Serpents and Vasoorimala. The more most important festival celebrated here is the Pattu Ulsavam beginning on the 1st of Idavam (May-June). Devotes can offer the Kalamezhuth and Pattu as well as the special jackfruit offered at that time.  Valiya Guruthi is offered at the end of the Pattulsavam. The Bharani in the month of Meenam (March- April) is celebrated as the annual festival. Apart from that Vinayaka Chathurthi, Navaraathri, Mandalakaalam, Thrikaarthika in Vrichikam, Aswathy in Vrichikam as the consecration day followed by Devi Bhagavatham Navaha Yajnam and Ramayanamasacharanam in Karkidakam are celebrated with great fervour. Bharaniyoottu is an important offering. Food is distributed to the devotees on the star Bharani every month. Devotees can also offer Aayilya puja for the Serpents, Muttirakkal, Thulaabhaaram, Ganapathy Homam and Koottu payasam. Parisha Vadyam, the original form of the present-day Pancha Vadyam is performed here. It is an art form that was in existence only at Ramamangalam. Offering Kalamezhuthum Paattum is believed to bring respite from illnesses, improve educational skills, prosperity and the fortunes of the entire family. There is a unique well situated in the temple from which water is drawn for all the uses of the temple. It is deep inside the rocks and never goes dry. The temple is open for worship from 5.30 a.m. to 10 a.m. on all days.  On festival days, during the Mandalam, every Bharani day, consecration day and on the first of every Malayalam month the temple will be open from 5. p.m. to 7.30.p.m. also. The temple is managed by the Kshethra Kshema Samithi. Manayathaattu Brahmasri Anil Divakaran Namboothiri is the Thanthri now. To reach Ramamangalam from the north take the Perumbavoor – Kolenchery - Choondi road. From Mamalassery in the South, it is only 9. km. to reach Ramamangalam.  From Ernakulam one can reach Ramamangalam via Thripoonithura, Thiruvaankulam, Puthencruz and Choondi.
