Ayakkadu Sree Mahadeva Temple, also known as Ayakkadu Mahadeva Kshethram, is a prominent Siva temple located at Thrikkariyoor near Kothamangalam in Kerala. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple is revered for its spiritual importance and its traditional Kerala-style architecture. The temple is well known for its annual festival, during which rituals, cultural programs, and processions form an integral part of the celebrations. Devotees gather in large numbers to witness traditional performances, including temple arts, music, and occasional elephant processions, creating a vibrant and devotional atmosphere. The annual “Ulsavam” is celebrated in the Malayalam month of Kumbham (mid-February to mid-March) and spans three days. Each day is associated with
more specific star constellations - Rohini, Makayiram, and Thiruvathira—and features special poojas and rituals dedicated to Lord Siva. The final day, known as “Thiruvulsavam,” is the most significant, marked by elaborate ceremonies, grand processions, traditional Kerala percussion music, and, in some years, caparisoned elephants. Devotees participate in large numbers to offer prayers and witness the grand culmination of the festival.
