Panniyali Sree Maha Ganapathy Temple

History

Sree Maha Ganapathy Temple, Panniyali, is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Ganapathy, believed to have been constructed in the 18th century. The temple is located at Panniyali in Omalloor, a village panchayat in the Pathanamthitta district of Kerala. It is considered one of the prominent temples of Central Travancore, well known for the beauty and spiritual significance of the idol of Lord Ganapathy worshipped here. The temple is a revered shrine where devotees come seeking blessings for success, prosperity, and the removal of obstacles in their lives. Surrounded by a calm and serene environment, the temple’s traditional architecture and sacred atmosphere offer a peaceful setting for more devotees to pray and participate in rituals and ceremonies dedicated to Lord Ganapathy. The temple shares a close association with the Brahmin family, whose members perform poojas at the famous Sree Rakthakandaswamy Temple at Omalloor. The temple structure was built by Tamil Brahmin artisans belonging to the Vishwakarma community, the same craftsmen responsible for the structural and decorative works of the Sree Rakthakandaswamy Temple. The sanctum sanctorum of the temple is constructed using hard black rock, carefully interlocked without the use of mortar, cement, or other binding materials. This remarkable construction reflects the exceptional craftsmanship and architectural skill of traditional South Indian temple builders. The idol of Lord Ganesh (Vigneshwara) worshipped here is unique, with a height of about 1.5 feet. The sculpture is simple in appearance, without ornamental decorations, yet it radiates a powerful spiritual presence and aesthetic beauty that deeply inspires devotees. In its early years, the temple was owned and managed by the Mullassery family. Later, it was handed over to the Meppallil family, who eventually donated the temple and the land to a trust without any expectation of return. Following this generous act, the Sree Maha Ganapathy Temple Trust (Reg. No. P 14/2007) was formed in 2006 by devotees from the region to manage the temple and its activities. Since then, the administration of the temple has been entrusted to this governing body. However, the members of the Mullassery family have continued their long-standing tradition of performing poojas at the temple for several decades and continue to do so even today.
