This is at Padur in Aalathoor Thaluk of
Palakkad district. It is believed to have
been in existence during the Sangha period and is more than 800 to 1000 years old.
In those days, the area was filled with wild growth of trees and shrubs. A woman
was cutting leaves to feed the goats when she had to sharpen her sickle. As she
rubbed it on a stone, blood started oozing out. In astrological consultations, it was seen to have the effulgence of Lord Ayyappa. The sanctum, facing west,
is without a roof and open to the skies. The area belonged to a
more
Nair family
named Chenganatt, and even today, the first offering for several rituals is to
be made by the members of this family. Later, it came into the possession of the
Poovally Manan, a Namboothiri family. Now it is under a committee of local
devotees. The annual festival is announced with kooryidal on the 1st day of the month of Makaram, and
the Vela festival comes 41
days after that. Seven days before the Vela,
there is pattukoora after
which the festivities with Niramala,
vilakk and other rituals take place. Since Lord Ayyappa’s effulgence is present,
all offerings to appease Sani (Saturn) are important here. Devotees believe
that the Lord has a special affection for children, and so they are brought here
for ceremonies like giving rice for the first time, initiation into learning
and submitting the child to the Lord in a symbolic manner. The temple can be
reached on the Alathoor – Pazhayannoor route.
