Ivormadom Sree Krishna Temple

History

Devotees go to the Ivormadom temple to perform the last rites of their ancestors and they are blessed by Lord Sreekrishna in the form of Sree Parthasarathy. This temple is situated in central Kerala in Thrissur District very near to Palakkad District towards North East. It is on the banks of the holy river Nila, known as Bharatapuzha. The exact location is a village known as Pampady in the Tiruvilwamala Panchayath famous for its scenic beauty. In this village, the Bharatapuzha is called Bharata Khand. The renowned Kurukshetra war described in the Puranas and History is well known to the people of Bharat. The many warriors more who died in this battle are said to have attained salvation only after the Pandavas performed the last rites for them in Ivormadom. The Pandavas went to many places and did the necessary rituals so that the ancestors may rest in peace but they became sad when they came to know that the departed souls had not attained Moksha. Finally, as their Guru Sree Vyasa Maharshi suggested, they went to the banks of the Bharatapuzha and gave Tharpana (the last ritual to get salvation) to the dead ancestors. It is said that only then the departed souls were pleased and blessed by the Pandavas. Immediately the blessed Pandavas installed the idol of Sree Krishna on the banks of this river and so the temple came to be known as Ivormadom, since they were five in number. History relates that the Pandavas built the temple and installed the Sree Krishna Idol under the guidance of Sree Veda Vyasa Maharshi. So devotees from all parts of India come here to perform the last rites of departed souls, receive the blessings of Lord Krishna and return happily with great mental satisfaction. This temple has various sub-deities like Lord Siva, Lord Ganapathy, Lord Mahalakshmi, Lord Ayyappa and Nagas. There is a pond in this temple known as Padma Teertha. It is believed that there are Navagrahas and also Veda Vyasa Maharshi’s presence in this temple. It seems that departed souls of certain families who have not attained salvation create problems for the people of the family. So, they go to Ivormadom and perform Tila Homam, a ritual for the dead and Bali Tharpana and return with great mental peace. It is said that the temple is 6000 years old. It was dilapidated, so devotees joined together and reconstructed the Sreekovil, Mukhamandapam, Chuttambalam etc. The idol has been covered with Panchaloha. All this was possible due to the blessings of the Lord Sreekrishna in the form of Sree Parthasarathy.
