Subrahmanya Swamy Temple Pallom

History

Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam, founded in 1903 under the leadership of the illustrious socio-spiritual reformer Sree Narayana Guru (1854–1928), played a pivotal role in combating caste discrimination, untouchability, alcoholism, and social and religious inequalities. Under the dynamic leadership of T. K. Madhavan (1885–1930), the message of the SNDP Yogam spread widely to the villages of Kuttanad in the Kottayam and Alappuzha districts of Kerala. By 1928, the first 100 branches of the SNDP Yogam were established, among which the SNDP Branch No. 28 at Pallom, Kottayam, gained prominence. Sree Narayana Guru personally handed over the registration certificate to its leaders at the Mahadeva Temple premises more in Nagampadom, Kottayam. During this period, the SNDP Yogam encouraged its followers to abandon expensive and superstitious social practices and rituals, and instead pursue freedom through education while engaging in industrial and commercial activities for material prosperity. Earlier, the local backward community of Ezhavas had an organisation known as Njanodaya Yogam, which later continued its activities more vigorously under the SNDP branch. The SNDP constructed a prayer hall adorned with the portrait of Gurudevan. In time, a special altar was established where a Vel representing Lord Subrahmanya was worshipped. Subsequently, following the guidance of Swami Theerthar, a disciple of Sree Narayana Guru, a decision was made to construct a grand Mahakshethram dedicated to Lord Subrahmanya, modelled after the Palani temple. This sacred shrine came to be known as Dakshinapalani. A separate temple for the worship of Sree Narayana Guru was also built within the complex. Today, this temple complex attracts thousands of devotees from across Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Preliminary construction work for the Sree Subrahmanya Swamy Temple began in 1983 with active public participation. However, due to limited funds, progress was slow. On 11 May 1997, renowned temple architect Parakottu Sree Vijayahanu was entrusted with the construction. On 11 July 1997, the Bimbam of Sre Subrahmanya Swamy was consecrated under the guidance of Brahmasree Karthikeyan Thanthrikal, following the Tamil Nadu style of temple architecture. Along with the main deity, the Bimbams of Ganapathy, Durga Devi, Saraswathi, and Gopalavishnu were consecrated in subsidiary shrines (Upadevalayas). Additionally, idols of Lord Siva, Lord Ayyappa, Nagarajavu, and Nagayekshi were consecrated in separate, smaller temples within the complex.
