This temple is at Pottore, in Thrissur
district. Legend has it that long ago, a stone was seen in the field, and its
effulgence was noticed by the farmers. They started worshipping Bhadrakali in
the self-originated stone. The Goddess was referred to as Cherangil Bhagavathy
as she was seen in the cheru, the mud of the field. The Brahmins, locally
referred toas Pottore, took up the responsibility of looking after the temple, and so the area came to be known as Pottore. They worshipped this self-originated
Goddess as well as Goddess Karthyayani, who was consecrated to the south of
that. Later, the Brahmin families
more
became extinct, and the temple lay neglected.
Later, two Nair families who came to own the land believed that the two
goddesses were the same and consecrated the idol that is seen there today. So,
the goddess is worshipped in both gentle and fierce forms. As there
were indications of the presence of Vaishnavite power as per astrological findings,
Sastha and Ganapathy were consecrated as subordinate deities. Later, the temple
was taken over by the Devaswam Board. Main festivals are for Vidyaarambham and
on the star Karthika in the month of Vrischikam.
