This temple is at Pilicode, in Kasargod
district. It is one of the most famous Bhadrakali temples in northern Kerala.
It is easily accessible as it is only half a kilometre from the National
Highway and 2 km from the Cheruvathur railway station. The temple faces north.
The idol consecrated here is a Vaalkannadi,
a metallic mirror, and the devotee can see his own reflection when he
looks at the consecration. The Goddess exhibits both the gentle and the fierce
forms. Legends say that this temple is
also known as the Dayaramangalam temple. In the songs of Theyyams, it is also referred to as Dayaramangalam. But
more
in the Devaswom documents, it is known as
Rayaramangalam. This temple is connected with the Mangaladevi temple at
Mangalore. Devotees generally go to the Mangaladevi temple after a dip in the
river here. Legend has it that the Goddess came from Manathana, also known as
Sapthamathrupuram. Once Kalakadu Thanthri, a great Thanthrik and scholar, was
taking a dip in this river at Manathana. He saw a beautiful young woman there
and realised that it could not be an ordinary woman. The woman offered him Thali, the herb for washing the hair.
Thanthri knew that she was divine, and instead of using it on his head, he ate
it with great reverence. The Goddess
then appeared before him. She gave him three things: a mirror, a lance and a
crown. She asked him to consecrate them where the cow and the tiger lay
together in harmony. The Thanthri went
on his way, looking for the spot mentioned by the Goddess. When he reached the Kavu at Akkinanaadu in Pilicodu,
he saw the footprints of the cow and the tiger. As he went on, he saw the two
animals together at Darayamangalam Kottam under a banyan tree. They were
Orppazhassi and Vettekkoru Makan in disguise.
He decided that this was the place indicated by the goddess and
consecrated the mirror there. The temple was built by Dayaran, the King of
Kunnamangalam. It is from his name that the temple came to be known as Dayaramangalam. Pooramahotsavam in the
month of Meenam and Pattu in the month of Vrischikam are very important here.
The Pooramahotsavam is different from what is seen in other temples. It lasts
for one month.
