Poonthanam Sree Krishna Temple Edathupuram

History

Edathupuram Poonthanam Sree Krishna Temple at Angadipuram is deeply associated with the renowned Bhaktha Kavi Poonthanam Namboodiri, who is believed to have installed the deity of Lord Krishna. Poonthanam was a contemporary of Melpathur Bhattathiripad, the celebrated scholar and author of the Narayaneeyam. While Melpathur composed his work in Sanskrit, Poonthanam expressed his devotion through simple yet profound Malayalam verses. Tradition holds that Lord Krishna once revealed in a dream to Melpathur that He valued Poonthanam’s pure devotion more than scholarly knowledge. Poonthanam Namboodiri was a devoted pilgrim to Guruvayur and undertook the journey from Angadipuram to Guruvayur on foot every month, a distance of nearly 60 kilometres more by today’s roads. As he advanced in age, the journey became increasingly difficult. On one such occasion, overcome with exhaustion, he sat down and cried out to Lord Krishna, saying he could walk no further. It is believed that Lord Krishna appeared beside him and gently assured him that there was no need to travel to Guruvayur to see Him. Since Krishna appeared on Poonthanam’s left side, the place came to be known as Edathupuram, meaning “left side.” Poonthanam installed the deity at that very spot and began daily worship, which eventually led to the establishment of a small temple. After Poonthanam’s passing, the temple fell into neglect, with daily poojas discontinued and parts of the structure, including the roof and walls, collapsing over time. In recent years, the temple has been undergoing renovation and is now managed by a dedicated committee, restoring its spiritual significance and legacy.
