Vadakkedathu Hanuman Swamy Temple

History

Vadakkedathu Hanuman Swamy Temple, also known as Sree Hanuman Kovil, is located in Ernakulam. The temple traces its origins to the mid-1800s and was established by Venkat Rao (Venkoba Rao), the Dewan of Cochin, during the reign of Maharaja Rama Varma. In 1857 (ME 1032), the Maharaja granted land east of the Ernakulathappan Temple for the installation of the idol discovered by Venkat Rao. The temple was consecrated by Sode Vadiraja Swamiji and is considered an ancient shrine within the Ernakulam Shiva Kshetra complex. Renowned for its royal patronage, the temple was reconstructed using fire-resistant materials after a major fire, resulting in a unique blend of traditional more and modern architectural styles. Maharaja Rama Varma remained a devoted visitor and benefactor of the temple until his demise in 1932.
