Located at Minalur, about 12 km from Thrissur town, Kuttiyankavu Bhagavathy Temple is an ancient shrine steeped in mythology and local tradition. The presiding deity is Goddess Bhadrakali, believed to have manifested after the defeat of the demon Darukan. According to legend, the goddess came to serve a devoted warrior, Sree Parakkulangara Panicker, marking the sacred origins of the temple. Local folklore narrates that Parakkulangara Panicker once found the goddess resting within an umbrella while returning home. Later, he consecrated her at Manakulam, and the temple’s traditions subsequently became associated with the Manakulam Swaroopam. The temple thus holds a unique place in the spiritual history of the
more region. The famous Minalur Pooram is celebrated at Kuttiyankavu Bhagavathy Temple, with the annual festival observed on the last day of Makaram or the first day of Kumbham. The Pooram is jointly conducted by the two desoms Minalur and Thiruthiparambu (Ambalapuram). Rich rituals, vibrant festivities, and traditional Melam, the classical Kerala temple orchestra performed with five instruments, attract large numbers of devotees every year, making the festival a major cultural and religious event of the area.
