This temple is at
Thuruvelikunnu, Vaikom, in Kottayam district. It is more than 1000 years old.
Durga Devi is the main deity consecrated here. Legend says that the idol of
Devi that was brought for consecration at the Udayanapuram temple could not be
consecrated there. So, the Namboothiris of Marpadi illam accepted the idol,
built a temple and consecrated Devi there. They worshipped her as their family
deity. Ganapathy, Shastha, Bhadrakali, Yakshi and Gandharva are consecrated as
subordinate deities. In ancient times, the beginning of the festival at the Vaikom temple used to be announced here too.
