History

Sree Vasudevapuram Mahavishnu Temple is believed to be a very ancient temple consecrated by Maharshi Parasuraman. The presence of Mahalakshmi is also felt along with Vishnu. After the consecration, the Maharshi entrusted the temple responsibilities to some local Brahmins. These Brahmins became prosperous with the blessings of the Goddess Mahalakshmi. But later they became indifferent to the activities of the temple. Their irresponsibility brought about their downfall and the temple also lost its wealth and glory in the course of time. After a long period Vilwamangalam Swamikal, the great devotee of Lord Guruvayoorappan visited the temple. He had the vision of Mahalakshmi engaged in the service of more Lord Mahavishnu. The Swami asked the Devi, the cause of the loss of prosperity of the temple and the poverty of the people living in that area even though Her presence was there. She replied that the officials of the temple and the people were not taking care of the temple rituals and so she was busy serving the Lord. As a result, she did not have time to attend to the various problems of the people. The Vilwamangalam Swamikal told the Devi that if the payers of the devotees are not answered, they will stop visiting the temple and turn into atheists. Hearing the request of the swami the Devi promised him that she'll give Darshan to Her devotees once a year. The Swami told Mahalakshmi that she should bless the devotees not only with wealth but also fame, health, knowledge, success in a job, Mangalyam and good progeny. The Devi replied that her presence will be felt in the temple for 8 days starting with the Akshaya Trithiya in the month of Vaisakha. On these 8 days, she will be worshipped in 8 different forms as Ashtalakshmy. Veera Lakshmi, Gajalakshmi, Santhanalakshmi, Vijayalakshmi, Dhanyalakshmi, Adilakshmi, Dhanalakshmi, Mahalakshmi respectively on each day. After this incident, the ritual of Tambula Samarpanam to the Devi came into effect as an important offering. Tambula Samarpanam - Tambula Samarpanam is a very holy and important ritual. This is an offering in which betel leaves, areca nut and money according to the devotee’s ability is placed before Lord Vishnu and Mahalakshmi with a request of prayer. It is believed that couples who visit the temple on these days will be blessed with a prosperous and happy family life. Ashtalakshmi Sankalpam - Lakshmi is the Goddess of prosperity. She has many forms. In the general sense, she is worshipped for wealth. But wealth alone cannot make life happy and prosperous. Everyone needs a healthy life along with wealth, fame, happy married life, prosperity, landed property and a house. All these can be achieved by worshipping Mahalakshmi in her different forms. Rice and Turmeric Para-The Rice Para is offered to Lord Mahavishnu for prosperity The Turmeric Para is offered to Mahalakshmi for a long and happy married life. Mahalakshmi Pooja This pooja is conducted during the full moon day in the month of "Aswina' Kanakadhara Sthothram, Mahalakshmi Sahsranamam and Mahalakshmi Ashtagam mantras etc are recited and Archanas performed. People believe that the performance of these Archanas and recitation of mantras will bring prosperity and good luck. Astami - Rohini, Pournami in the month of Aswina, "Akshaya Trithiya' are the important days of the temple. Main Offerings - Three Nivedyams ie. "Tirumadhuram' made of 'Kadali' bananas, 'Palpayasam' and Appam are offered for the fulfilment of the desires of devotees. 3 offerings which are called 'Moonnu Uruli Nivedyam' is served in three uruli made of gold, silver and bell metal. 'Muzhukkappu' is another important offering which many people conduct for becoming prosperous. On the Akshaya Trithiya day, Kalabhabhishekam is conducted for Lord Mahavishnu, witnessing this pooja is said to bring prosperity and Moksha. On the same day Annadanam' is given to all the devotees who visit the temple. Annadanam consists of special four currys only with raw rice and payasam. Those who participate in the Kalabhabhishekam and partake in the annadanam will be blessed with unlimited prosperity. Route to the Temple - From Athani in NH 47 (Near Nedumbassery Airport) take a deviation to Paravoor road through which one should travel five kilometres (Bus stop Chungam). From NH 17 take a deviation to Paravoor Airport road (through Manjali) and travel ten kikilometresowards Airport and you will reach the bus stop Chungam.
