Andunny Devar Siva Temple

History

Andunny Devar Siva Temple is situated in Vellanikkara, Thrissur district. The construction of the temple is traditionally attributed to Perumthachan, the legendary master craftsman of the 2nd century, indicating the temple’s great antiquity. Certain structures, such as the Koothambalam (traditional dance hall), are believed to be over 1,600 years old. Lord Siva is worshipped as the presiding deity. The temple features a vatta sreekovil, a circular sanctum sanctorum that reflects classic Kerala temple architecture. Mahashivratri is the main festival celebrated at the temple, and Monday is considered the most auspicious day for worship. The annual festival is observed on the Thiruvathira nakshatra during the month of more Dhanu (December–January). The celebrations are renowned for their vibrant kavadi rituals, Pooram festivities, and grand processions featuring caparisoned elephants.
