The Sree Mookambika Temple is situated in Ramanthali, Kannur district, approximately 7 km southwest of Payyannur, accessible via the Paalakode road. The temple is believed to be around 600 years old. According to local tradition, two Brahmins once visited the Kollur Mookambika Temple and performed a 41-day penance. On the final night, Devi appeared to them in a dream and instructed them to take a dip in the sacred Sowparnika River, promising a divine sign for their worship. Following her guidance, one of them received a saligramam and the other a Sivalingam. On returning home, they placed these sacred objects in an uri (hanging vessel). Miraculously,
more the uri began to swing despite the absence of any breeze. Astrological findings revealed that the Sivalingam was connected to Veerabhadra, and therefore, both deities needed separate consecrations. Accordingly, the saligramam was consecrated in the main sreekovil facing east, while the Veerabhadra shrine was installed at the northeast corner, resembling the layout at Kollur. The temple is currently administered by the Malabar Devaswom Board. The main sreekovil is a single-storied, square-shaped structure. The Navaratri festival is a major annual celebration. Thanthram is vested with Ambli Illam, while the shanthi duties are performed by Ettikkat Illam.
