Koikad Sreekrishna Temple

History

Koikad Sreekrishna Temple, located at Mekkadambu near Thrippunithura in Ernakulam district, is an ancient shrine dedicated to Lord Krishna. The temple is believed to be over 1,000 years old. Tradition says the temple structure was transported by boat from Thrippunithura (Chithrapuzha), and the bimbam (idol) was crafted by the same artisan who created the idols at the Peringamala Mahavishnu Temple and the Pothiyil Mahavishnu Temple. The consecration of these temples also took place around the same period. According to lore, the original owner of the temple faced financial difficulties and was unable to complete the consecration. To meet the temple’s upkeep expenses, he served as a shanthi more (priest) at the Alappuzha Sreekrishna Swamy Temple and saved his earnings for the purpose. Devotees believe that sincere prayers at Koikad Sreekrishna Temple help students achieve excellence in their studies. The temple is also revered as a place where couples seeking children receive blessings.
