Cheruvallikavu Devi Temple

History

Cheruvallikavu Devi Temple, situated in the Kottayam district of Kerala, along the Ponkunnam-Manimala route, is an ancient and revered Hindu shrine dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali, a powerful manifestation of the Divine Mother. The temple is believed to be over 1,000 years old, reflecting deep historical and cultural roots in the region. The temple is well known and is popularly called the Judge Ammavan Temple. According to local tradition, the temple’s origins are linked to a family that once fled Irinjalakuda during the war between the Zamorin of Kozhikode and the King of Kochi. This family settled near Eeraattupetta at a place called Kondoor, where the more ruler of Poonjar granted them the Sree Krishna temple to worship their family deity. Despite the long distance, family members continued to travel frequently to worship the Goddess. As they grew older, one member, named Kochan Pillai, found the journey too arduous. While returning home with tears in his eyes, he placed his umbrella near a well. Miraculously, the umbrella became fixed to the ground, and after astrological consultation, it was believed that the Goddess had manifested on the umbrella. Realising the sacredness of the site, a small shrine was built to enshrine the Goddess. Eventually, this grew into a proper temple near the Sree Krishna temple. Among the sub-deities, the shrine of Judge Ammavan holds special significance, as there is no other known temple with such a deity. It is believed that worshipping Judge Ammavan helps resolve issues related to judicial matters. For this reason, many lawyers, judges, and individuals involved in legal cases visit the shrine and offer coconuts as a form of devotion. Judge Ammavan’s shrine is rooted in local lore about an honest judge who suffered an unjust fate and whose spirit is now appeased at the temple, making this aspect of worship unique among Kerala’s temple traditions. Today, the Cheruvally Devi Temple remains an important pilgrimage destination, blending ancient legend, faith, and distinctive devotional practices that reflect the spiritual heritage of Kerala.
