Mokeri Uma Maheswara Temple

History

Uma Maheswara Temple, located at Pathippalam Navodaya Road in Mokeri, Kannur, Kerala, is a prominent and culturally significant shrine. The temple, known for its long-standing spiritual importance, was renovated by the Saravana Perumal family and later administered by his son, Sri S. Swaminathan. The temple features modern amenities, including a wheelchair-accessible entrance, and is well known for its vibrant festivals, especially those celebrated in the month of Edavam (May–June). Local legends claim the temple to be over 5,000 years old and even one of the oldest temples in Kerala. Its origins are linked to the Ramayana era, and tradition holds that six Brahmin families consecrated the main more sanctum during the early period of the Kali Yuga. Though an exact date of construction is not recorded, significant restoration work was undertaken in the 1980s, followed by a major renovation based on an astrological assessment conducted in 2011.
