Pazhayaveedu Sree Bhagavathy Temple

History

Pazhayaveedu Sree Bhagavathy Temple, located about 2 km south of Alappuzha town on the Alappuzha - Changanacherry road, is a revered shrine dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathy, worshipped here as Goddess Bhadrakali. The temple also enshrines sub-deities such as Murugan, Sastha, and Ayyappan, and is administered by the Pazhaveedu Devaswam Committee under the NSS Karayogam. Known for its serene atmosphere, the temple features a spacious compound, a well-maintained kshethra kulam, and traditional Kerala architecture with an Oottupura. The temple’s most important festival is the Meena Bharani Maholsavam, celebrated in March–April. It is a major homecoming event for devotees, who consider attending the festival a sacred duty. The celebrations include more rituals like Kuthiyottam, Padayani, Thalappoli, and the spectacular Garudan Purappadu, where a beautifully decorated chariot is pulled through the streets at midnight. Devotees believe Pazhaveettilamma’s blessings bring protection, solace, and divine grace, making the festival a deeply cherished spiritual experience.
