Puthiyakavu Bhagavathy Temple

History

In the heart of Quilon town stands ‘Puthiakavu Bhagavathy temple' protecting and sheltering thousands of disciples. The same Bhadrakali of Kalighat at Calcutta worshipped by Sree Rama Krishna Paramahamsa and Vivekananda Swamy is sitting in this temple in 'Sivaa' (Parvathy) assumption. Devi Chaithanya' (The vigour) is increasing day by day as all the rituals and rites are done here scientifically, as per Thanthric stipulations and with dedication and sincerity. Now this is also one of the Maha temples (big) in Kerala. Eight days festival is celebrated with all scientific rituals during the month Meenam and Arattu on star Makam. Pongala festival on the last Friday of the more month 'Kumbam' attracts thousands and thousands of ladies symbolizing their mental contribution by feeding pongala to Devi and attaining relief. Year by year the number of people attending this function is increasing. 'Manjaneerattu'(yellow bathing) and "Karakam' procession conducted during pongala gives happiness and enjoyment to the devotees. Even from distant places ladies reach here for offering 'Rahu Kala Naranga Deepam'. On Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday thousands of ladies come to make this offering. They light wicks in lemon pieces and pray to Goddess by singing and request for all sorts of reliefs. Guruthy pooja is a main offering on all Tuesday to Devi which give relief from diseases and attacks from rivals and grants the attainment of wishes. This is also done by thousands of devotees on hearing about the positive results from others who have already experienced it. The number of persons coming to this temple is increasing day by day.  Sub deities are Sri Parameswara, Ganapathy, Durga, Sastha, Hanuman Swamy, Brahma rakshas, Yogeswaraswamy, Madan Thampuran, Navagrahas, Nagathans and poojas for all these deities are also done as per rules. Another special and important pooja of Puthiyakavu is 'Kanyaka Pooja' on 'Durgashtami and "Saubhagya Pooja' on Makam of Karkidakam. All these poojas and the Vilakkupooja during Pournamy (full moon) day attract large numbers of lady devotees to the temple. Every Sunday at 10 am for the fulfilment of desires Abbishta Bhalasidhi Yenjam is performed and Annadana is given to devotees. Yanja is performed using the following items: Bhasmam, Turmeric, Milk, Honey, Ghee, Gingely Oil, Tender Coconut, Kalabam, etc. Those who have faith in this Yanja come in large numbers daily to the temple. Puthiyakavu Bhagavathy Annapoorna Programme: With the blessing of the Goddess of Puthiakavu every day Annadana offering (food giving) is done in the Quilon district hospital. Disciples can book this offering on special days like weddings, Choroonu (feeding a child for 1" time), Birthday and death day (Sradham) etc.
