Kasaragod Mallikarjuna Temple

History

Mallikarjuna Temple is one of the oldest and most prominent temples in Kasaragod, dedicated to Lord Siva, worshipped here as Mallikarjuna. Located in the heart of the city near the taluk office, the temple stands close to the Kumbala River on its southern side. According to legend, the idol of Lord Siva was adorned by Arjuna, one of the Pandavas from the Mahabharata. The temple dates back to the 17th century and was built by the Ikkeri kings to provide a place of worship for the warriors brought from Karnataka. After years of neglect, the temple was relocated in 1977 due to land acquisition for the more railway line and was later rebuilt. The compound wall was added in 1985. The temple complex includes the sreekovil, namaskara mandapam, chuttambalam, valiya-balikkal and maryaada. The inner walls of the Valiyambalam feature modern paintings of Sree Sankaracharya, Lord Ayyappa, Lord Ganapathi, Lord Siva and Goddess Durga.
