Morkulangara Devi Temple Vazhapally

History

This ancient temple is located in Vazhapally, Changanassery, Kottayam district. It is just 1km east from MC Road near Changanassery Bypass road at Vazhapally Kizhakkumbhagam. There are Bhadrakali temples at the four sides of Vazhapally, and this is the one on the eastern side. The Goddess is consecrated as Porkili Devi, as she fights Darikasura. It was the ‘land of Porkili devi ‘that got transformed into the name of the area, Morkulangara. During the invasion by the forces of Tippu Sultan, a branch of the Kottayam royal family from the north of Kerala came to Vazhapally in Thekkumkoor, and the King of Thekkumkoor allowed them more to stay there permanently. The king built two palaces for them there, known as Kottayathu Madam and Neerazhikettu. Porkili Devi of Muzhukunnu Mala was the deity worshipped by the Kottayam royal family. To worship the Goddess every day, they built a temple and consecrated Porkili Devi in it.
