Sasthamkudy Sastha Durgadevi Temple

History

This temple is located in Vazhapilly, Modavoor, Mppvatupuzha, Ernakulam district. Vettaykkorumakan is generally consecrated and worshipped in the northern parts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. It is believed that after bestowing the Ashupathasthra to Arjuna, Lord Siva and Parvati continued to reside on earth as a hunter and huntress. A son was born to them at that time. This child was very powerful and proficient in hunting. He killed many Asuras even while a child and came to be known as Vettaykkorumakan. Soon, the boy turned his attention towards the Devas and the Rishis. They complained about him to Lord Brahma. As suggested by Lord more Brahma, they approached Lord Siva to complain about his son. Lord Siva did not take it seriously and told them that the boy would change when he grew up. But as they could not suffer the boy’s pranks, they approached Maha Vishnu. Vishnu made a gold dagger which would attract anyone. He exhibited the weapon before Lord Siva’s son. The boy wanted to get it. MahaVishnu raised some conditions before handing him the weapon. He was not to use his bow and arrow and had to promise to work for the welfare of the people on the earth. The boy agreed to all that and came to the land created by Parasurama. He had grown up and came to be worshipped as Dharmashastha in Kerala. He became the family deity of Nedumparambil Illam at Moovattupuzha. When there was no male member left in that family, the temple came to be under the Edapally Swaroopam. Soon, the temple was destroyed. As astrological consultations showed the presence of an effulgence there, the local people started lighting lamps and worshipping at the place where the temple stood. Today, Dharmashastha and Durgadevi are worshipped there.
