Palluruthy Sree Bhavaneeswara Temple

History

Shri Bhavaneeswara Temple has a rich history intertwined with the Sree Dharma Paripalana Yogam (SDPY), which was established in 1904 under the guidance and blessings of Sree Narayana Guru. This charitable society has dedicated itself to the spiritual and educational advancement of the Ezhava community for over a century. At the heart of the SDPY's endeavors stands the Sree Bhavaneeswara Temple, which is administered by the Sree Bhavaneeswara Devaswam. The temple's principal deity is Lord Shiva, consecrated by Sree Narayana Gurudevan on the 8th of March 1916. On this auspicious occasion, Gurudevan also laid the foundation stone for the Lower Primary School under the SDPY. The blessings more of Gurudevan continue to be the driving force behind all the developments undertaken by the SDPY. Sree Bhavaneeswara Mahakshethram, located in Palluruthy, is a renowned temple in Central Kerala. It holds the distinction of being the first temple among the backward classes to have a Golden Mast (Swarna Dhwajam). Alongside the temple, the SDPY schools, which rank as the second-largest school network in the state, constitute the two significant institutions run by the Sree Dharma Paripalana Yogam. The SDPY, founded under Gurudevan's auspices, plays a pivotal role in the educational, social, cultural, and economic upliftment of the Ezhava community in the region. This temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, adheres to all the sacred rituals of a Mahakshethram, under the spiritual guidance of a Kshethram Thanthri. The temple's annual ten-day festival, commencing on Bharani Nakshathram during the month of Kumbha, draws thousands of devotees from various places. The Kavadi Khoshayathra, conducted on Pooya Mahotsava day, is a spectacular event. Cultural and entertainment programs held on festival days take place at two locations the temple grounds and the High school grounds featuring performances by renowned artists and masters. The temple's administration is overseen by the Manager Devaswom, one of the three executives of the yogam, chosen through democratic means and in accordance with the yogam's by-laws. The President and Manager of schools serve as the other two executives. The overall administration of the yogam is a collaborative effort involving the President, Managers, a council, and a General Committee. Members of the advisory board for schools and Devaswom, as well as internal auditors, are nominated by the elected body.
