Rakthakantaswamy Temple Omalloor

History

Rakthakandaswamy was first consecrated at Arathakandanmoozhi in the village of Kalleli in Pathanamthitta district.  One prominent person of that village was a great enthusiast for playing chess in the 8th century. At one time, he started losing all the games that he played.  This man was also a drunkard and a womaniser. He prayed and made offerings to Rakthakandaswamy, but his fortune did not change. Disappointed at this, he stopped all the help he had been giving to the temple. He even made it appear that all the ills that happened in the village were because of Rakthakantaswamy. Soon, the temple fell into ruin, and all sorts more of troubles affected the villagers. The villagers decided to destroy the temple completely and construct another one. They uprooted the idol and threw it into the river. But the effulgence of the deity floated as a flower and reached the Uzhuvath Devi temple at the neighbouring village. A mother and child were taking a bath in the river and saw this flower. As the child wanted that flower, the mother took it and kept it on the rock at the bank of the river to take it home after the bath. But the flower became fixed there. An astrological consultation was held, and it was found to be the effulgence of Rakthakantaswamy to whom Uzhuvath Bhagavathy had offered a place. A place was chosen for consecrating the idol, and it was done with the deity facing the east. But the next mornin,g the idol was found facing the west, away from the people who had thrown the Lord into the water. So, a new temple was constructed and Rakthakantswami was consecrated as Dharmasastha. The place where the temple was built was first known as Nalloor, meaning the good place. ‘Om’ was added to it after the consecration, and soon it came to be Omalloor.
