History

Varattuchira Kochumandakkadu Devi Temple, located in Keralapuram village of Kollam district, Kerala, is an ancient and revered shrine dedicated to Goddess Durga, also known as Devi. Believed to be over a thousand years old, the temple stands as a fine example of architectural harmony, blending the elegance of traditional Kerala design with distinctive Tamil and Dravidian influences. The temple’s grand annual festival, Varattu Mahotsavam, celebrated during the Malayalam month of Meenam (March–April), is a major spiritual and cultural event in the region. The eight-day celebration features a spectacular Varattu procession, where the deity is taken around the village on a beautifully decorated elephant. The festival is further enriched more with vibrant cultural programs, traditional rituals, fireworks, and ceremonies, drawing large crowds of devotees and visitors who come to seek the blessings of Goddess Durga and partake in the festive spirit.
