Vaipur Sree Mahadeva Temple

History

Vaipur Sree Mahadeva Temple, situated in Mallappally, Pathanamthitta district of Kerala, is a sacred Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Siva. Located along the Vaipur - Kulathoor Moozhy road, the temple stands as a magnificent example of traditional Kerala temple architecture. The temple complex features an east-facing vatta sreekovil (round sanctum sanctorum), nalambalam, kodimaram (flagstaff), and namaskara mandapam. The serene Manimala River flows close to the shrine, and the temple is also an important site for performing Vavu Bali rituals. The temple’s annual festival, celebrated in the Malayalam month of Dhanu, spans ten days and includes various traditional rituals and pujas dedicated to Lord Shiva. The festivities are marked more by processions with caparisoned elephants, traditional Kerala music and art forms, and the sacred Pallivetta ritual, culminating in the Arattu ceremony. Maha Shivaratri is another major festival observed here with great devotion. Additionally, during the month of Karkidakam, the temple hosts the annual Karkidakavavu Bali and Pitru Tarpanam, when hundreds of devotees gather to offer prayers and pay homage to their ancestors.
