Moonnumoorthy Temple, located at Cheraya, Kongad, Palakkad district, is a unique shrine where the Trimurtis - Kirathamoorthy, Mahavishnu and Sankara Narayanan are worshipped together within a single sanctum. This makes it one of the rarest temples of its kind in Kerala. According to legend, the temple originated when a woman sharpening her sickle on a rock saw blood oozing from it. Upon closer inspection, the rock was found to feature an idol with three faces, representing the deities, which led to the establishment of the temple. It is regarded as a prehistoric swayambhu (self-manifested) temple. Locally known as
more the Moonnumoorthy Kshetram, the temple is distinct in that the Trimurtis are enshrined in their childhood forms. Unlike the conventional depictions of Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshwara, here the deities are revered as Brahmane, Sankara, and Narayana. Considered the “dearest of the rarest,” the Moonnumoorthy Temple is believed to be a standalone shrine of its kind. The Malabar Devaswom Board presently manages the temple.
