Vadayar Major Elamkavu Devi Temple

History

Vadayar Elamkavu Devi Temple, situated in Vadayar of Kottayam district, is renowned for its vibrant traditions and legends. The famous Attuvela festival is celebrated here as a grand welcome for the Goddess of Kodungalloor, who is believed to visit her sister, the Goddess of Elamkavu. During this two-day festival, a spectacular water procession takes place. Beautifully illuminated canoes, including one carrying a large replica of the temple, glide along the river, accompanied by numerous smaller decorated canoes and the rhythmic beats of temple percussion music. The procession begins at Attuvela Kadavu, located about 2 km from the temple. The presiding deity of the temple faces west. According more to legend, the Goddess was brought from Kodungalloor after the Vadakkumkoor kingdom encountered a series of difficulties. Hence, Elamkavu Bhagavathy is revered as the sister of Kodungalloor Bhagavathy. It is also believed that the idol of the Devi was first placed at Attuvela Kadavu, nearly 3 km away from the temple, before being consecrated at its present location.
