Thengunattavila Sree Umamaheswara Temple

History

This temple is at Uchakada, Thiruvananthapuram. In the area famous for its ancient temples in Tamil Nadu, a Brahmin youth lived in the year AD 1202. He was an expert in martial arts, mantraic and tantric rites, and many other sciences. Due to his proficiency, he was known as Periya Swami. When the first invasion by the Muslim ruler Alavudin Khilji took place from AD 1296 to 1311, many of the temples in South India were attacked. So many people from these areas came to Travancore. Among them were the members of the family of Periya Swami. They came to the areas near Kanyakumari. more The local chieftains of this area were suspicious of Periya Swami because of his extraordinary prowess.  They wanted to make him go away from there. So, when the King advertised for an opponent to the wrestler of the palace, they gave the name of Periya Swami without his knowledge. When he came to know about it, Periya Swami started practising his arts for the contest. He went on a pilgrimage in preparation for the wrestling match. There, he met a group of tribals and came to know about their deity, Mruthyunjaya deva.  He went on a penance and pleased Meuthyunjaya Deva.  He then came back and became victorious in the wrestling match.  The King presented him with a horse, a bangle, a silken cloth and a sword.  He was also given 108 acres of land on the banks of Neyyar. He came to stay at Thirupuram to look after this land.  He married a girl from the Nadar sect. He built a temple for Mruthyunjaya Deva as instructed by the Lord, who appeared before him. The area came to be known as Kancheepuram as Periya Swami was from Kancheepuram. When Christian Missionaries started converting people to their religion in the 19th and 20th centuries, most of Periya Swami’s descendants converted to that religion. So, there was nobody to look after the temple. The temple was also destroyed when there was a flood in the Neyyar River.  Today, there is a huge tree marking the place where the temple once stood. When many unfortunate incidents happened in the area, astrological consultations were held. One of the descendants of Periya Swami came to stay in Thengunattavilayil. In 1914, Kochan Nadar, a member of the family, was blessed by Priya swami, and he was asked to build a temple at Thengunattavila.  In ancient times, Shaiva, Vaishnava, and Shaktheya powers were present in this area. So Kochan Nadar built a temple for Shiva and Parvathy at that place. Periya Swamy was also consecrated there. Mruthyunjaya Deva, Bhootham, Manthra moorthy, Kalri moorthy, Yogeeswaran, Melamkodu Yakshi and Moonnukuttathu Yakshi were also worshipped. The newly built Shiva temple then came to the present owners.
