Thozhuvancode Devi Temple

History

This temple is situated at Vattiyoorkavu in Thiruvananthapuram. Chamundi Devi is the main deity consecrated here. Details about the temple are available from records, information passed orally through generations, and what has been discovered by the astrologers. Two centuries ago, the tussle for power was going on in Travancore. The Ettuveettil Pillais were helping the Thampis against Marthandavarma. Kazhakoottathu Pilla, one of the prominent members among them, was in search of a master to train his family members in warfare. He came to know of Panikkar, who was proficient in it. Panikkar wanted his family deity, Chamundi Devi, to be consecrated where he trained the men. Marthanda Varma more destroyed the Thampis and was making attempts to destroy the family of the Ettuveettil Pillais. Then his minister Ramayyan Dalava informed him that it would not be possible for him to do that as long as Chamundi Devi was in the family. So Marthandavarma prayed to Lord Padmanabha to remove Chamundi Devi from there. The Thrimoorthis, the triumvirate of Gods, came to the southern door of the Chamundi Devi temple. When they told her what their devotee wanted, she was ready to go. She appeared in a dream to Panikkar and informed him about it. She also asked him to start on a journey and to take the two pillars from the southern gate. All the money he needed would be in it.  So Panikkar carried the effulgence of the Goddess and the money and started in a boat. As they reached a bank, the Goddess asked him to go north into the forest, where he would find someone to receive the effulgence. The triumvirate of Gods was waiting there, and the effulgence was consecrated there. Panikkar remained there worshipping the Goddess. Before the consecration of Chamundi Devi, the presence of Nagas and Durga Devi was there in that place. It was under the control of a brahmin family. Unhappy with the bad rituals performed by this family, the Goddess destroyed them. One of the last members of the family committed suicide before the Goddess Durga. Some twenty years ago, the present management under Sri. Thulasidharan took over the temple. There was only a painting of the Goddess. Now a new sanctum has been built for the Goddess. Temple for Karimkali Devi, consecrations for Ganapathy, Nagaraja, Nagayakshi and the Navagrahas have been built. Sree Hanuman has also been consecrated here. The temple is open for worship only on three days a week, Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. Offering a cock is a special feature for the goddess.
