Vediyoormadam Sree Bhadrakali Temple

History

This temple is located in Aalinchuvadu, Vennala, Ernakulam. The temple is ancient, and it has been recorded in the Kolezhuth inscriptions of ancient times. From the words inscribed, it can be understood that it originated 600 years ago in the month of Medam. There was a temple in a land measuring 7 acres. It was named Pankulam Maha Vishnu Temple. There was a gold flag staff, a rare thing in most temples in those days. Seven families in charge of the temple came together to hoist the flag to begin the annual festival. Then one year, one of them, representing Vetiyoor mana, was late in more arriving for the flag hoisting, and the other six members completed the ritual in his absence. He considered it an insult and decided to take revenge on the six members. As per the advice of someone equal in status to a Guru, he went to the Thiruvalla Tharayil Bhagavathy temple.  He met Kuzhikkatt Bhattathiripad, an ardent devotee of the goddess.  Then, as per his advice, the visitor also stayed there worshipping Bhagavathy.  After two decades of intense worship, the Goddess was pleased with him. He was given the effulgence of the Goddess, and he started from there in a boat. When the boat reached the place where Puzhakkara Patam stands today, it got stuck in the sand. He then got down there and consecrated the effulgence to the east of Vennalapara. In an astrological consultation, it was found that he had brought the effulgence of the Goddess in the wood of the jackfruit tree. There is another opinion that the Vennala para was formed after the Goddess was brought there. There is a legend behind the name Vennala. Butter ( venna in Malayalam) was the main offering for Mahavishnu at the Pankulam temple. The place where the leaves in which this was offered were left after use became solidified into a rock when the Goddess looked at it.  The leaf (ila ) in which venna (butter ) was offered came to be joined together to get the name Vennala. After the Goddess was consecrated there, the Vishnu temple, as well as those who looked after it, declined and disappeared.  When no worship was performed in that area for a long time, the Goddess decided to show herself. The man who had brought the effulgence there informed Kuzhikkatt Bhattathiri about it. Bhattathiri came here and consecrated the Goddess in the present position, facing the east. A torch would be kept burning on the Vennala para during the Thalapoli festival performed by three families. Then the oracle would talk to the devotees. A member of the Vazhakkapally family had accompanied the elder of the Vettiyoor man, and he later served as the oracle. Later, the festivals were discontinued, and pujas were performed only once a month.  When many unfortunate incidents happened in the area, an astrological consultation was held, and the door facing the east was closed, and another one to the west was opened. The Goddess here is consecrated in the form in which she listened to the Gods praising her before she started killing Darika. In another astrological consultation held here, the displeasure of Vishnu was found, and it was decided to re-establish the Pankulam Mahavishnu temple. So, a balalaya (temporary sanctum) was built and Vishnu was consecrated here. Ganapathy and Siva were consecrated as subordinate deities.
