Mannur Sree Maha Siva Temple

History

This ancient temple is at Mannur in the Kozhikode district. It is believed to be more than 1000 years old. The writings in Vattezhuthth on the temple walls illustrate its antiquity. Most of them are more than 400 years old. However, detailed studies have not yet been conducted on the temple and its writings. It is believed to be one of the 108 Siva temples consecrated by Parasurama in Kerala. Aghora Siva, the most powerful form of Siva, is consecrated here.  It is believed that the central face of the five faces of Siva represents Aghora Siva.  Maha Vishnu has also been consecrated here. It is more connected with the legend of Daksha Yaga. Sathi Devi killed herself after being humiliated at the Daksha Yaga. Siva, in his anger, severed the head of Daksha, and he got the head of a goat instead. It is believed that Maha Vishnu helped Siva with his Sudarshana Chakra. That is how Maha Vishnu came to be consecrated at the Mannur temple. There are some special features noted in the construction of the temple. The Siva temple is older than the Maha Vishnu temple. The temple is constructed according to the ancient Kerala – Dravida architectural style. The sanctum of the Siva temple is also constructed specially. It resembles the back side of an elephant, made in red laterite stone. It is two-storeyed. The deity faces the west. It is also believed that the consecration of Maha Vishnu was to reduce the power of the consecration of Siva.
